The EPA’s Lead-Based Paint Renovation, Repair, and Painting Program (RRP) is a federal regulatory program that affects contractors, property managers, and others whose work may disturb painted surfaces. The program applies to those individuals that conduct renovation, remodeling, or paint removal activities on residential houses, apartments, and child-occupied facilities such as schools and day care centers built before 1978. The RRP includes pre-renovation education as well as training, certification, and work practice requirements.

Pre-renovation education requirements are effective now:
Contractors, property managers, and others who perform renovations for compensation in residential housing, apartments, and child occupied facilities built before 1978 are required to distribute the lead pamphlet, “Renovate Right” before starting renovation work. http://www.epa.gov/lead/pubs/renovaterightbrochure.pdf
Lead Paint Safety: A Field Guide for Painting , Home Maintenance, and Renovation Work - This booklet will give you tips on how to work in a lead-safe manner.
Training, certification, and work practice requirements became effective April 22, 2010:
Firms are required to be certified, their employees must be trained in the use of lead-safe work practices, and lead-safe work practices that minimize occupants’ exposure to lead hazards must be followed. A firms’ employees must take an EPA approved 8 hour training course in order to obtain certification and become a “certified renovator”.

EPA-Accredited Renovation, Repair, and Painting Program (RRP) Training Providers
The following training providers have been accredited by EPA to provide training for renovators and dust sampling technicians under EPA's Renovation, Repair, and Painting (RRP) Program. If individuals had previously taken an 8 hour approved lead safe work practices training course, then a 4 hour EPA approved RRP refresher course is required. Refresher course information may be accessed through the following link: www.epa.gov/lead/pubs/epahudrrmodel_refresher.html

EPA Region 1 will follow up on tips and complaints from the public regarding violations of laws that require people to be informed of potential Lead-Based Paint hazards when they buy, rent, or hire contractors to renovate a home or child-occupied facility. Exposure to lead paint is a serious health concern, especially for young children.
